Coaches & team managers

Working with children checks

Shelby Fisher is our Child Protection Officer. With a background in social sciences and work in child protection, she makes sure our coaches and team managers meet working with children (WWC) requirements, to keep kids safe and enjoying the sport.

All coaches and team managers need a WWC check unless exempt, and must register themselves in PlayHQ with their WWC details for the new season.

  • A new WWC costs $11, plus about $20 for a passport photo. Renewals cost $10.
  • Parents coaching or managing their own child's team are exempt. If you also coach a team without your child in it, you need a WWC for that team.
  • GABA has WWC forms ready to go — contact Shelby if you need help filling them out or lodging them.

No refs, no game

Respect our referees

Basketball can't happen without referees. They give their time and commitment so we can all enjoy the game. Please leave the referees alone and focus on your own team.

Referees make mistakes, just like players miss shots and coaches miss plays, but they're always doing their best. Negative comments or abuse from the sidelines will not be tolerated.

  • Players – focus on playing the game and showing your skills.
  • Coaches – lead your team and let the referees manage the rules.
  • Supporters – cheer positively for your side, not against the officials.

Want to referee or return to refereeing? Contact Natasha Kirkpatrick at referee@gaba.au or see Become a referee.
